We’re taking Tait Tough to new heights.
By Evan Forester, Tait Tough Tester.
Ever since we launched our portable radio from a catapult, I’ve dreamed of taking the Tait portable higher. Fortunately, we have some good friends who build drones at Aeronavics and they let us visit for some extreme drop testing.
We started by dropping the radio from 30 meters (98.5 feet) onto the ground. We weren’t too nervous, and of course the radio survived.
Next we tried 66 meters (217 feet). Watching from our monitor on the ground, it was clear that we were beginning to reach ridiculous heights. But again, there was no damage. Still not satisfied, we decided to push the limits and fly our portable to 100 meters (328 feet) before letting it freefall. It took 4.5 seconds to drop, and according to the splat calculator, impacted with a speed of 160km/h (100mph).
We all held our breath as it slammed into the ground. But once again, the Tait portable radio proved tough and survived a 100 meter drop test. If you’d like to see it for yourself, check out the video below, which includes cameras from both the ground and the drone itself as it flew higher and higher into the skies. Special thanks to Aeronavics letting us use their impressive drones.
