Analog-to-Digital Simulcast nets 40% coverage increase across fewer sites
Sparsely populated, with an international border and drug trafficking problems, Cochise County, Arizona was seeking a secure, digital upgrade for its multi-agency analogy simulcast network. High tech scanners had been violating the current network with ease, reducing the law enforcement effectiveness and putting officers at risk.
The new Tait P25 Simulcast network used the existing frequencies, reduced the number of sites from five to three, while increasing coverage saturation and total coverage by 40%. Radios from various P25 vendors operate on the network and a dedicated analog channel. This means all agencies can collaborate and interoperate.

Law Enforcement professionals and fire crew volunteers share upgraded network
Before Oneida County, Wisconsin invested in their communications upgrade, their portable radio fleet experienced only 40% coverage across a wilderness of woodland, lakes and mountains. The existing network served both Law Enforcement and Public Safety officers, including fire crew volunteers who relied on their analog pagers.
The County was looking to improve coverage to 90%, establish P25 security for Law Enforcement, implement a staged migration to become narrowband compliant and prepare for digital communications – all without compromising their current operations.
As a result of coverage prediction, verification and design, the optimized simulcast network has improved coverage that exceeds the requested 90%, minimized dead spots, maintained the analog paging functions and provided a platform for future upgrade.

Faced with a mountainous topography, servicing the Public Safety communication needs of a city population of 45,000 and providing security for a nearby State University challenged the City of San Luis Obispo, California. Their 30 year old analog network was so unreliable that responders often had to leave an emergency site and drive until they could establish radio communications.
With their new six-site P25 digital simulcast network, the City’s Police, SWAT, Fire, Public Works and Utilities can now interoperate across the IP-based network. Improved network coverage benefits City and State Police
Centred on a state-of-the-art Public Safety Dispatch Centre, this city’s Police, Fire and EMS have a mutual aid agreement with neighboring communities to share one of their three sites with the State Police. The city experienced the frustrations of poor coverage for many years. Officers took for granted that some locations were coverage dead spots that put their lives in danger.
Motivated by the FCC narrowbanding mandate, the upgrade to P25 Simulcast uses four existing frequencies. Narrowbanded Simulcast coverage means greater availability and deeper coverage penetration, in most cases, from 55% to more than 90% on roads and in buildings.
