‘Giving Back’ to our communities with aprons and hair nets

Tait at Houston Food BankOur goal as a company is to support our clients with world-class products, services and solutions to help keep communities safe.

One of the other ways we can do this is through our corporate citizenship initiative: a great way for us to ‘give back’ to our communities.

Last month, a group of Tait employees volunteered at the Houston Food Bank (HFB); the largest food bank in the United States.

During 2012, the HFB distributed 76 million pounds of product in its 18-county service area. This year, that figure will be more like 80 million as the HFB distributes around 6.7 million pounds of food products every month. In keeping with its dedication to providing healthy nutritious foods, an average of two million pounds of that monthly figure is fresh produce.

After donning their aprons and hair nets the Tait team went to work. The crew spent four hours slicing and dicing vegetables, and serving freshly-cooked meals into plastic containers.

When the day was done, the Tait volunteers had prepared 2,225 pounds of food – equivalent to 1,854 meals – saving the Houston Food Bank over $760 in labor costs.

We’re planning similar events for every month – the next event is this Friday, October 11th at the Houston Zoo. The Tait volunteers will also be seen serving food at local soup kitchens, participating in a Holiday children’s event, adopting a highway to clean, volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and much more! Watch this space.
